A flight case is specifically designed to keep your valuables secure whilst transporting from A to B, whether it's by land, air or across the seas. Essentially a flight case provides a padded and fitted environment for the movement of those items that are dearest to you. Musicians are prime candidates for a quality case; professional ones anyway. As a keen but awful amateur musician it is fine to stuff your instruments in the back of a car or van, safe in the knowledge that, wherever it is you are travelling, you do not actually have a gig to go to anyway, because no one wants to hear you play. In such an instance, it does not necessarily matter if your cymbal is left somewhere on the M4, because the noise it will generate when trampled by a car will probably produce a far sweeter sound than you could ever make it produce.
Aside from musicians, a flight case is a common item amongst photographers, film crews and arts and antiques collectors, and will usually take the form of a rectangle or square, with a handle and lock on the exterior. The interior will usually be heavily padded, with the padding designed specifically to constrain the movement of whatever item it is you are transporting. For expensive items, it is good idea to have a case specially made. Airport baggage handlers are not renowned for their finesse. A customised case will negate the nightmare of peering out of the window as your flight lands in torremolinos, all set for your breakthrough gig, only to witness your ill fitting case being tossed around like tossing around was going out of fashion.
There are several different varieties of flight case, each designed for a specific use. The most common style comes with a hinged and removable lid for simplicity of access. Secondly, there is the fixed lid flight case, which comes complete with at least four latches to keep the lid securely in place. Thirdly, there is a large flight case that behaves much like a refrigerator, without the capacity for keeping food and drinks cold of course. This flight case often has the addition of a ramp as the goods contained within are often heavy, making removal, without such an addition, complicated. The final type of flight travel case is a much smaller, briefcase style carry bag, ideal for safely transporting more diminutive items such as collectables, cell phones and smaller musical instruments. With an interior made of foam and contoured to the precise shape for the contents, even percussion instruments will unable to rattle about. Every quality case comes with a durable and water proof hard shell, so even the largest roadie can sit on them without endangering the innards.
