What Are Chlorine Tablets?

Whether you own an indoor swimming pool or an above-ground pool, chlorine tablets or chlorine additives of some kind are an important part of pool maintenance.  Chlorine tablets are added to pool water to kill bacteria, viruses and fungi.  When the appropriate amount is used in relation to the size of the swimming pool, the water is kept free from microorganisms that not only make the pool water look unsightly but can spread diseases among swimmers. Proper pool maintenance includes using chlorine tablets, granular chlorine or chlorine sticks.  But what is the difference among these products?

Chlorine tablets: Chlorine tablets offer a convenient form of chlorine to add to pool water. They come in several sizes, but the most common sizes are 3" tablets and 1" tablets. Each offers a different dose of chlorine for the pool water.  They also dissolve at different rates. The active ingredient in chlorine tablets is Trichloro-S-Triazinetrione. Look for products containing 90% Trichloro-S-Triazinetrione.  Cheaper products found at the so-called "big box" stores often contain a higher percentage of binders and fillers.  This means there's less chlorine per tablet, and you end up using more tablets to achieve the results of a slightly more expensive product. It may be better to purchase chlorine tablets from a company specializing in swimming pool supplies.  Investigate and compare products, and be sure you're purchasing the best one for your needs.
Chlorine sticks: Chlorine sticks are similar to chlorine tablets. They contain the same chemical and offer a convenient and easy-to-add form of chlorine to treat swimming pool water.
Granular chlorine: Granular chlorine may be added to pool water directly, but some forms need to be pre-dissolved before added to the pool. Read the label directions.  Some types must be added to the pool water daily.

Advantages of Chlorine Tablets

With three forms of chlorine to choose among, why choose chlorine tablets?

Convenience: Chlorine tablets offer a set dose of chlorine per tablet.  It's easier to determine how much chlorine you need to add to the pool with tablets.
Slow release:  Tablets and sticks offer a slower, gradual release of chlorine. The higher the quality of the tablets (with fewer fillers or binders), the slower the release. This treats the water over the course of days rather than all at once.
Easy to use:  With a floating chlorine feeder or automatic chemical feeder, available from pool supply companies, chlorine tablets are easy to use.

Always follow the directions for using and storing chlorine tablets safely. Keep them locked in a cupboard or cabinet, a garage or your pool shed, away from curious children and pets.  In the event that youngsters or pets ingest chlorine tablets, call your local poison control center immediately.

The smart use of chlorine tablets, in addition to properly testing the pH of the swimming pool water and keeping the pool water clean, ensures a healthy environment for your family to enjoy outdoor fun this summer.
