Furniture Trends: Return of the Tuft

Though you may be thinking to yourself, "Tufts? Those are so dated!" You'd be wrong! These are not your grandmother's tufts! However, it is worth noting that "old school" styles are returning to popularity, but many of these furniture pieces feature modern lines that give them an updated look despite their seemingly dated origins.

Tufted furniture has been around for more than 100 years. It is a style that at one point was so popular, people were patenting their own tufting methods and tools, hoping to prevent others from stealing their potential cash cows. At the turn of the 1900s, tufted furniture had reached its peak and soon after, fell out of style as a drab, dreary and dated look.

As time went on, the tuft returned: it was particularly popular with the mid century style. Low slung, long sofas that featured tufted cushions were a staple of the mid century modern look (and still are today). This look graced a number of different furniture pieces from sofas and love seats to ottomans and chairs. Of course, it went back out of style just as quickly as it had come back in. At least, for the majority of the population. A few dedicated mid century modern enthusiasts kept the look alive and today it is still a popular look.

With that, we get to the 1970s where yet again, tufted came back into style and this is what many people today tend to associate the dated look with: hideous avocado green or rustic orange tufted sofas and other furniture.

Today, the tuft has undergone an updated look. Designers have paired clean lines with the tuft for a remake of the mid century modern look. Designers have also taken vintage looks for furniture and created updated looks of those as well, so there is a tufted furniture look for just about everyone.

Tufted furniture can be costly, so it's important to be sure that you're confident in the style before you invest in any large pieces. Tufts are a trend that do continually come back, so if you're confident in your choice, enjoy!
