How to Transform Old Vases into Attractive Desk Lamps

Lamps can add style and illumination to your home decor. You can easily use antique vases to craft stylish desk lamps with basic supplies like a lamp kit and an appealing lamp shade of your choice. Here is a complete tutorial for you to build your own lamp from an old vase.

Step One: Make a template of the mouth of your vase by measuring and tracing it out on paper. Cut out your template and place it against the opening to ensure you have the right size. The template should be a perfect fit, sitting just below the inside of the rim.

Step Two: Using your template, make a tracing onto a section of plywood and cut it out with a jigsaw. For very wide-mouthed vases, it is a good idea to paint the plywood in a color matching your vase. For this project, you will also need a chandelier canopy which you can paint in a matching color as well to make certain that the final result is well-coordinated.

Step Three: Apply a thick bead of construction-strength glue to the rim of your chandelier canopy and attach the rim to the center of the plywood section. Let dry till the pieces are bonded together.

Step Four: When converting vases into desk lamps, it is extremely important to stabilize them to anchor the vase against the weight of the shade and the elements of the lamp kit. To do this, you will need to fill the vase with sand or decorative pebbles. In case of a clear glass lamp, do this before you fix the plywood and canopy into place.

Step Five: Your lamp kit will contain a “stopper” which you will need to thread through the hole in the center of the chandelier canopy. Now, insert the bulb socket into the stopper.

Step Six: Take a “slip-uno” style fitter that sits snugly onto the socket and place it on the socket. All you need to do is to add a shade over the fitter and screw-in a bulb into the socket. Plug-in the lamp to enjoy your new and unique lamp.
